Dakshin Barasat, Sept, 6: On the occasion of Teachers' Day a cultural function was arranged here yesterday in Dakshin Barasat High School on the play ground of the school under the sunny sky. It is the birthday of Dr. Sarba Pally Radhakrishnan, the second president of free India. A stage was made for this purpose and the school building was decorated with flags and flowers. S.K.Pal was presided over the function and Honorable M.L.A. Mr. Bishwanath Das graced the occasion as the special guest. The function began with a patriotic song sung by some girls at 11 a.m. Students guardians and enthusiasts were attended the function. The programme included recitations, songs and dances. In each of there were good many participants. All sections were very interesting. Melodious and rhythm filled the entire atmosphere. Speeches of the president special guest and headmaster were inspiring and befitting to the occasion. Immense enthusiasm was noticed among the students. Students presented some gifts to their beloved teachers. The students and the teachers took part in a friendly football match; it has formed a strong bond between teachers and students. The entire area wore a festive look. The function was over with the closing sung by some students.

There was a old farmer who had worked hard all his life. He had three young sons who were very lazy and they did not want to do any work. One day, he got a flash of an idea. He told them that there was a great treasure lying hidden in one of his fields, If they dug them properly, they would find that and became very rich. After hearing that, they dug their whole land but found no treasure anywhere. Then the farmer advised them to sow seeds. The land yielded a rich crop. They sold it in the market and earned a lot of money. Then they understand the wisdom of his father and the value of hard work.

 Once upon a time there was an old lady. She lived alone. Unfortunately, she had lost her sight. She called a doctor but he demanded a huge amount of fees. The woman said to him, “I’ll pay your fees if you can cure me, otherwise not.” The doctor agreed to treat her. Every day the doctor came and took away some valuable furniture’s from her house after checking her up. After a long period, the woman got back her eyesight. The doctor demanded his fees but the woman refused to pay. The doctor went to the court and the judge wanted to know what the matter was. The woman said, “I can’t see my furniture now as I saw before. The judge understood everything. He gave the verdict in favor of the old lady.

Mahasweta Devi

 

Mahasweta Devi was born on 14 January in 1926, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She was a Bengali fiction writer, a social activist, a crusader for the tribal communities, and a feminist. Mahasweta Devi worked as a journalist and an English professor. She has almost a 100 novels and over 20 collections of short stories to her name, primarily written in Bengali but often translated to other languages. She had completed her BA and MA in English in West Bengal."Jhansir Rani"(1956) was her 1st book. Her masterpieces includes 'Draupadi', 'Haazar Churasi Kimau', 'Rudali',etc. She has been described as one of the boldest female writers in India. She was also the founding member of Aboriginal United Association Mahasweta Devi has won both the Sahitya Akademi ( in 1979) and Jnanpith ( in 1996) awards for literary excellence.She is also a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay award ( in 1997) and the Padma Vibhushan (2006) and  Padamshri ( in 1986). This great woman took her last breath on 28 July in 2016.

Sister Nivedita

Bhagini (Sister) Nivedita born 28 October 1867 was a Scots-Irish social worker, author, teacher and a disciple of Swami Vivekananda. She spent her childhood and early days of her youth in Ireland. From her father, and her college professor, she learned many valuable lessons like – service to mankind is the true service to God. She worked as school teacher and later also opened a school. She was committed to marry a Welsh youth who died soon after their engagement. She carried on her life. Sister Nivedita met Swami Vivekananda in 1895 in London and traveled to Calcutta (present-day Kolkata), India in 1898. Swami Vivekananda gave her the name Nivedita (meaning "Dedicated to God") when he initiated her into the vow of Brahmacharya on 25 March 1898. In November 1898, she opened a girls' school in Bagbazar area of Calcutta. She wanted to educate those girls who were deprived of even basic education. During the plague epidemic in Calcutta in 1899 Nivedita nursed and took care of the poor patients.  This great woman took her last breath on 13 October in 1911.
